Kerwin and Tanya, parents of a neurodivergent child, believe it is critical to raise community awareness about these children’s special needs, as well as to foster tolerance and acceptance. As part of their school district’s diversity, equity, and inclusivity initiative, they took part in an online forum with educators, parents, students, and law enforcement in 2021. The Yardes talked about the ups and downs of raising a child with autism and speech delay, including stories of Maceo’s love of music, what it was like when former neighbors called the cops on their son for “making too much noise,” their family’s collaboration with law enforcement to protect their son, and their efforts to raise neurodiversity awareness in their community.
